5. Moritz Wagner, PF, — Michigan

It’s nothing new for teams that are in “pick the best player available” mode and have needs across the board in the second round to lean toward a local product.

Wagner hails from Germany, but he’s famous in Michigan for his run with the Wolverines, leading the team to a 2018 national title game appearance after copping Big Ten Tournament MVP honors and later posting 24 points, 15 rebounds and three steals in the Final Four against Loyola-Chicago.

At 6’11”, Wagner is most likely going to be a stretch-4 in the pros. He knocked down 39 percent of his 3s in his last two seasons at Michigan, averaging 14.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game as a junior before going pro.

But it’s not like the Pistons would only pick him to make some local fans happy.

Wagner is a very good player who has potential to be a solid pro because he fits the mold of the modern-day NBA power forward. He can produce in the paint, but also give defenses problems with his ability to shoot from the outside.
