The Detroit Pistons have one pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, but it’s not in the lottery or even in the first round. Here are five players they should consider adding to the roster.

Assuming this is not a set-up for a Hollywood-style underdog story – or barring a trade into the first round – it’s safe to say the Detroit Pistons are not going to land a franchise-changing superstar in the 2018 NBA Draft.

The Pistons have one draft pick on June 21, and it’s the 42nd overall selection; right in the middle of the second round.

Plenty of teams over the years have discovered starters, All-Stars, championship contributors and even Hall-of-Famers in the second round. The Pistons actually found Dennis Rodman in the second round in 1986 – although there were fewer teams in the league back then, so Rodman was actually the 27th overall pick and would’ve been a first-rounder today.

More recently, however, Detroit’s best second round picks have made their biggest impact for other teams: Spencer Dinwiddie (Nets), Khris Middleton (Bucks) and Mehmet Okur (Jazz), for example, were all chosen by the Pistons in the second round before finding their niche elsewhere.

Most draft analysts seem to agree that this year’s class is deep and loaded with talent, so the Pistons do have a good chance at getting a solid player with the 42nd selection that can help a team looking to return to the playoffs. Here are five realistic candidates.
