4. George Hill experiment didn’t work out

In the summer of 2017, George Hill signed a three-year, $57 million contract with the Kings.

The deal surprised many, as coming off a career-high 16.9 points per game the year prior, Hill looked like he could still be a valuable asset to a contending team, not someone who should be stealing minutes away from the point guard of the future in De’Aaron Fox on a team years away from playoff contention.

For 43 games, Hill played fairly well in Sacramento, averaging only 10.3 points per game but shooting a career-high 45.3 percent from 3-point range.

Understanding the direction of the team, the Kings traded Hill in a three-team deal at the deadline, bringing in Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert, who’s capable of being a 3-and-D wing threat but struggles with consistency on both ends.

In the grand scheme of the George Hill era in Sacramento, the Kings escaped a lot sooner than a lot of teams do from their unwanted contracts.

That does not, however, make up for the fact that the $57 million that went to Hill could’ve been spread out more evenly among talent that better fit Sacramento’s timeline more than the 32-year-old ever did.
