5. Early losing streak sets the tone for the season

The start of every NBA season brings a fresh start to all 30 teams. Despite a clear gap between the elites and the cellar-dwellers, it doesn’t matter, as all teams start off 0-0 with unlimited possibilities awaiting them.

With such a young roster, the Kings were never expected to make the playoffs, much less contend for one of the final spots, but the way they began the season spoke volumes as to how the year would progress.

Winning just one of their its nine games, Sacramento wasn’t even going to try to fake competitiveness, making a statement early on that the 2017-18 season would be just like all the rest: painfully uneventful.

For the most part, fans have a general idea of where their team will be once the season comes to a close, but that doesn’t mean that said team can’t give its fans just a glimmer of hope or a simple tease that things may be different in the early stages of the basketball year.

Whether due to a simple shortage of talent or a lack of confidence, the Kings couldn’t deliver the bare minimum of hope, basically laying down before most teams even know what they are.
