4. Jontay Porter, C — Missouri

Pau Gasol isn’t getting any younger. At some point the Spurs are going to have to put a legitimate long-term plan in place at the center position. Could Jontay Porter be the guy to lead San Antonio into a new era?

Now I don’t think he’s quite ready to conjure up any overnight magic. Porter is only a freshman, so he’s going to need some time to adjust to life in the NBA. However, with what we saw during his only season at Missouri, it’s safe to assume he could play a pivotal role in the Spurs’ eventual return to the top of the Western Conference.

What I like is the potential for Porter to play under Gasol for a year or two. While their games aren’t completely alike, there are facets of the youngster’s approach that could benefit from the tutelage of the well-traveled Spaniard.

During his brief college career, the former Tiger really shined on the offensive end. Capable of scoring down low or sinking it from deep, Porter figures to only get better on that end of the floor as his career progresses. While his defense needs some work, the Spurs staff shouldn’t have much trouble whipping him into shape.

With his impressive passing, exceptional range and relentless motor, Porter could develop into a valuable piece of any NBA lineup. His lack of elite athleticism and rim protection skills will scare away some teams, but I see San Antonio as an ideal landing spot for the budding center.
