5. Chandler Hutchison, SF — Boise State

Realistically, Chandler Hutchison may be a bit of a stretch at No. 18. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Popovich fall in love with this slightly under-the-radar wing who has all of the tools the Spurs look for in their players.

First, the former Bronco is a smart, instinctive player with a great feel for the game. He’s got the Spurs’ basketball IQ, shows out on the defensive end and is an excellent passer. All of the tools are there for him to develop into a staple in the San Antonio lineup, and probably sooner than some would expect.

Plus, Hutchison brings a little fire to the hardwood:

Now most see the fact that he’s coming into the league at 22 years old as a bad sign. However, the Spurs have always leaned towards mature, experienced players, and Hutchison fits the bill. He played in the go-to role this past season at Boise State, but is more than capable of serving in a reduced role — and may actually be better suited for it.

With all the uncertainty surrounding Kawhi, the Spurs need some options to bolster the wing just in case. Hutchison projects as a quality 3-and-D player who can develop into a plus starter in the very near future. I don’t think his ceiling is as high as other players who will likely be available at this point in the draft, but you gotta believe Popovich would maximize his potential.
