Orlando Magic: D.J. Augustin or Shelvin Mack their future backup PG?
By Luke Duffy
3. Defensive ability
Neither player is known for big-time defensive plays, but both guys are capable on that end when engaged. That being said, they are usually hidden on that end when playing against opponent’s starting guards. Either that, or they’re having modest success against fellow backups.
A look at both of their defensive ratings for the season doesn’t bring much confidence either. Both Augustin and Mack putting up numbers that are worse than the league average of around 102.

Augustin comes in at 105.7 for the season so far, while it is 104.6 for Mack. Worth noting is the fact Augustin has played 50 games to Mack’s 44, starting 11 while Mack has started three.
Also important is the fact Augustin has started the last three games since Payton’s departure, playing more minutes and therefore having a bigger impact on both ends of the court.
So again it is tough to separate the two, with the fact Mack has seen some time at the 2-guard spot and has covered opponent’s shooting guards a positive for him. He brings added flexibility.
Both players have posted numbers below 100 twice in their careers to date too. In the end, Augustin just gets the edge having started 201 games to Mack’s 53.
If nothing else, he is bringing more experience in defending all manner of opposing guards, but the reality is centers Bismack Biyombo and Khem Birch make up for many of their shortcomings.
Verdict: Augustin
