Kyrie Irving has been the most clutch player in the NBA this season, which proves that he can be the best player on a great team.
It looks like the Boston Celtics made a good decision to ship off Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder and the Brooklyn Nets pick in return for Kyrie Irving.
It’s pretty evident with the eye test and in the win column that this is a younger, more versatile team led by a better all-around player in Irving. The Celtics, without Gordon Hayward, have won 16 consecutive games, boasting wins against the Golden State Warriors and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Boston has become the king of comebacks, as it has erased five double-digit leads during its win streak. The Celtics’ biggest win of the season came in a 92-88 win against Golden State. Not only did they hold the best scoring team in the league to under 90 points, but they also came back from a 17-point deficit against the defending champions.
The Celtics have been able to weather almost every storm. Kyrie credits Boston’s win streak to their ability to stick together during the tough times, via ESPN‘s Tim MacMahon.
"“Teams make their runs and we just stay the course. We’re just unwavering in our approach, and I think that we’ve been that way. In the last few games, we’ve been down quite a few, so for us it’s just about battling back when teams get a comfortable rhythm, whether it’d be in the first half or the second half. As a group, we continue just to stick together throughout anything and everything.”"
Some people might chuckle at the fact that it took an overtime period for the Celtics to defeat the 3-15 Mavericks on Monday night, but there are a few factors to consider. First of all, Boston hasn’t lost a game since Oct. 18 against Milwaukee, so natural human complacency tends to kick in when the pain of defeat is but a distant memory.
Also, Boston will get its opponent’s best effort every single night. Opposing teams have the Celtics marked on their calendars because every team wants to end their winning streak. The Celtics have responded well to adversity, and that shines a positive light on the face of the franchise.
Kyrie Irving is the most clutch player in the NBA
Kyrie Irving had a huge game against Dallas on Monday night. He scored 47 points on an efficient 22 shots and he scored 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting in overtime. Uncle Drew also outscored Dallas 17-12 over the final 12:47 of the game.

Despite the big performance, Irving’s numbers are actually down this year. He’s averaging fewer points and assists to go along with lower shooting splits across the board, but it doesn’t really matter because Irving is making wining plays.
The four-time All-Star has tightened up his defense and is averaging a career-high 1.6 steals per game. Kyrie is also averaging a defensive box plus/minus of 0.9, which had been a negative score in every previous year. Lastly, Irving is averaging a career-high .260 win shares per 48 minutes, which ranks fourth in the NBA.
This stat is the most impressive of all: Kyrie Irving has scored 65 points on 24-of-39 shooting in the clutch, which is defined as the score being within five points in the final five minutes of a game.
Kyrie Irving is obviously making a lot of winning plays, and that’s why the Celtics have an opportunity to make some noise in the postseason.
