Kyle Korver has been clutch for the Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers have had their struggles in this early season, but one of the bright spots has been Kyle Korver. He came through for them again on Friday as they defeated the Los Angeles Clippers, 118-113. What has led to his success?
I just can’t figure the Cleveland Cavaliers out.
Since the season started, they’ve played atrociously in the first and beginning of second halves, and then turn it on in the fourth quarter when they’re down 10.
It’s mind-boggling.
I get that a win is a win, but doing it like this is not the answer. Habits like the ones they’re developing can follow you for the whole season and into the playoffs.
They’re an old team, but they’re also talented. There’s enough on this Cavaliers team for them to dominate games. Isaiah Thomas is still a few weeks away from returning, but it’s still no excuse.
They were down 23 to the New York Knicks and came back to win, and on Friday they were down 15 to the struggling Los Angeles Clippers and won in overtime by five.
Maybe this is what Cavaliers fans should expect for the rest of the season: slow, lackadaisical defensive and offensive starts, but exciting comeback wins. I don’t know how any team can sustain that formula for 82 games.
While the Cavs try to figure themselves out, there has been at least one bright spot on the team besides LeBron James and Jeff Green.
It’s Kyle Korver.
In one of my articles last summer, I mentioned how Korver would be a much improved player this season compared to last.
He’s finally familiar with the offensive system of Tyronn Lue. He knows his spots on the floor, and the Cavs players know to clear around the perimeter when he’s going to make his C or L-cuts.
This stretch of games is the most comfortable I’ve seen Korver since being traded from the Atlanta Hawks last year.
During this four-game win streak of the Cavs, Korver has averaged 13.5 points per game off the bench. He’s also shooting 40 percent from 3-point range.
Besides Green, and at times Dwyane Wade, Korver has been the energy off the bench the Cavs have leaned on. According to ESPN.com, the Cavaliers are +1.58 with Korver on the floor. They’re +2.41 with him on the offensive end.
Korver also leads the NBA in fourth quarters scoring at least 19 points.
That’s impressive, and we’re only in November!
Korver is also doing all of the little things on the defensive end of the floor. Yes, I said defense. He’s guarding opposing players one-on-one and forcing bad shots, he’s getting key steals and his hustle on both sides of the floor has been fantastic.

He and James single-handedly won the game for the Cavs on Monday against the Knicks. His release is the quickest I’ve seen it in years. As soon as he runs off the cut, the ball is in the air. Opposing defenders don’t have an answer for it.
It’s just like watching Ray Allen (only without the movie).
He didn’t have as good a game against the Clippers on Friday, but he still made clutch shots down the stretch during the Cavaliers’ eventual comeback and win.
Some fans have suggested he starts, and I disagree. The biggest issue for the Cavs since James came back is the bench. It had little to no energy, and everything was on the starters. They couldn’t afford to take a break.
Now, with Korver, Green and Wade, they bring the energy, defense and scoring threat the club needs. According to Hoopsstats.com, the Cavaliers have the third-ranked bench in the NBA. They’re averaging 39.5 points per game.
He has brought the much-needed shooting the Cavs need this season — especially with J.R. Smith struggling.

I don’t know if Korver will keep up this pace, but for right now he is playing lights out, and it is the shining light as the Cavaliers figure their issues out.
