Orlando Magic: Top 5 performers from standout start
By Luke Duffy
5. Frank Vogel
It may seem surprising to see head coach Frank Vogel kick off this list, but the man deserves it for guiding the team to such a great start.
The players should rightly get credit for having this team near the top of a lot of statistical categories right now, but Vogel put those plans into place.
He also pulled a real surprise out of his coaching bag in that most expected this team to hang its hat on defensive effort every night. While there has been improvement here, the Magic currently have the second-best offensive rating (113.4) in the entire league, behind only the Golden State Warriors.
Even better, they are currently shooting 45.5 percent from three point range as a team. That’s the best percentage in the league right now.
Think about that for a second. There are more long range shooting teams than ever, the Warriors may be the best ever, and the Magic are better than them right now. Not that they care.
Considering the team was second-to-last in this category last season (32.8 percent), Vogel deserves huge credit for having the team buy into being a more modern offensive unit.
Also worth mentioning is Vogel’s ability to trot out versatile lineups, not overplay rookie Jonathan Isaac this early in his career and even give Mario Hezonja one last chance to prove he belongs.
No awards are given out in October, but right now Vogel is as good a head coach as there is in the league with what he’s done on a team nobody spoke about coming into the year.
