The New York Knicks, caught up in the quicksand of NBA failure, must take realistic steps to avoid another decade of laughter and losing.

“Futility” isn’t a kind word to describe a professional organization but the New York Knicks embody it better than anyone. Their attempts to be relevant birthed public scorn and losing records. If NBA failure is quicksand, the Knicks have been sinking in it for years.

In nature, being trapped in quicksand is one of the scariest and most frustrating places a person can be. The sand itself isn’t fatal, but the entrapment leads to dehydration and exhaustion. Escaping quicksand is possible, but it requires carefully followed steps.

Similarly, Steve Mills and Scott Perry should be very careful in their attempt to rescue the Knicks. Fighting too hard only leads to sinking, but not trying hard enough signifies the acceptance of failure. Bad contracts and awful trades became years of mismanagement by an owner who has no clue what he’s doing.

These Knicks arrive at a new season with the same old outlook: losing. As this NBA preseason winds down, Jeff Hornacek has his hands full with injury concerns and an antiquated roster. Consequently, immediate steps must be followed if this team expects to escape the quicksand.

Experts identify specific steps to follow when a person is trapped in quicksand. Adapting these steps to the New York Knicks shows a tangible path out of failure and closer to winning.
