5. Improve mid-range game and finishing close to the rim

Overall, Johnson shot at a 43.3 percent clip from the field last season. While not terrible, it’s certainly far from ideal.

One crucial area that let Johnson down was from the mid-range between 10-19 feet from the rim. Last season, he converted at just a 30.1 percent clip from this area. Considering this made up 19.9 percent of his total field goal attempts, it’s clearly an area in which Johnson needs to improve upon moving forward.

Another area of the floor Johnson needs to improve is finishing close to the rim. For a player such as Johnson who’s renowned for his aggressive, attacking style, this is somewhat surprising.

Last season, Johnson converted at a 55.9 percent clip from within five feet of the rim. With these attempts making up 29.7 of his field goal attempts, this is another aspect of Johnson’s offensive repertoire that certainly requires some fine-tuning.

Among all guards who averaged at least 2.0 field goal attempts per game within five feet of the rim last season (Johnson averaged 3.4,) the left-handed Johnson ranked 43rd in conversion rate. Considering his ability to take his man off the dribble and attack the defense (he averaged 5.7 drives per game last season,) the Heat will be clearly be looking for a more efficient return in this department in 2017-18.
