Los Angeles Clippers add Mark Hughes to revamped front office
The Los Angeles Clippers continue to add to their front office staff, signing executive Mark Hughes as the second new assistant GM this summer.
The Los Angeles Clippers made major changes to their roster this offseason. While losing Chris Paul put a damper on the team’s plans, they quickly recovered to make other key moves.
The roster will not be the only part of the team’s operations that will be different next season. The Clippers have already drastically altered their front office in dramatic fashion this season. Jerry West joined the team as a special advisor early in the offseason. Then, the Clippers finally removed Doc Rivers from his front office role.
After the restructuring brought about by adding West and removing Doc from the front office, the team added Michael Winger from the Oklahoma City Thunder to be their GM. Then, they brought Trent Redden over from the Cleveland Cavaliers to be an assistant to the GM.
The Clippers were not done after those moves, however. In the latest move from a remarkably busy offseason, they added former New York Knicks executive Mark Hughes to serve as another assistant GM. Although the Clippers have already revamped their front office multiple times this offseason, these moves show that Steve Ballmer is dedicated to rebuilding a front office that he formerly had foolishly left almost exclusively in Rivers’ hands.
Future Outlook
Adding Mark Hughes to the Clippers’ front office signals at least some form of completion. The current president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank is new to the front office, but has NBA head coaching experience. Jerry West obviously has a treasure trove worth of experience across every level of the NBA.

The first two new hires of the summer will help to fill in around that core of experience. Trent Redden was David Griffin’s right-hand man in Cleveland. He is widely respected around the league both for his business sense and his basketball acumen. Winger, the Thunder’s former team counsel as well as assistant GM, will provide more hardcore CBA knowledge. Since Frank is relatively new to the front office, that experience will be incredibly valuable.
Hughes will fill out the last major role left in the front office — player development. He started his career with the Knicks as a scout in 2007 and rose up the ranks to Director of Player Personnel in 2011. Adding Hughes to the front office signifies a focus on the team’s younger players that simply did not exist in the last few years.
The Los Angeles Clippers may continue to add more voices to the front office before the 2017-18 season starts. However, Mark Hughes fills out the final true void in the front office. His expertise in scouting and player development are great complements to the other new voices in Winger and Redden.
