The Washington Wizards proved last season they are true contenders in the Eastern Conference. Here are five keys ensuring they find the same success this year.

The Washington Wizards finished their 2016-17 year with a record of 49-33 last season, just missing the 50-win mark. Having their most successful season since they became the Wizards back in 1998 is surely a big deal.

Many factors play a part in their success and improvement over the past four years. The Wizards were a failing team from 2008 through the 2012 regular season and have come a long way in such short time.

The first key ingredient to the recipe for success boils down to wise choices during recent drafts and the development of those players.

The initial step in the right direction was selecting John Wall as the first overall pick during the 2009 NBA Draft. Next was selecting Bradley Beal in 2012 as the third overall pick. Completing the young core was another crucial piece, Otto Porter Jr. Again, at lucky No. 3 overall, the Washington Wizards selected Porter.

Since that time each have been extended or retained through at least the 2021-22 regular season. Bringing aboard Marcin Gortat and Markieff Morris as well gives you an all-around solid and well-seasoned starting five.

The Wizards took their rebuild over the years a step further and needed one more cog in the wheel to ensure these young stars get out on the right path. Scott Brooks became the head coach just last year, and the results couldn’t be more clear: This team comes to win.

This year, they will look to top their previous season and advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals is on that list. Here are five keys to the Washington Wizards contending during the 2017-18 regular season.
