Shooting Guard: Walter Davis

Honorable mentions:  Jeff Hornacek, Devin Booker, Paul Westphal

Walter Davis is an interesting case study, not only because he’s from the late ’70s and ’80s, but also because of the increased importance of the 3-point line. In terms of actual basketball fit and modern-day pace-and-space principles, someone like Jeff Hornacek or Devin Booker might be better on the wing here.

However, “Sweet D” also earned his nickname because of his pure jump shot, so even though he only shot 28 percent from downtown on 0.7 attempts per game for his career in Phoenix, we’re going to assume his 52 percent shooting overall would carry the day.

True enough, Davis statistically peaked as a rookie when he posted 24.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals per game en route to Rookie of the Year and All-NBA Second Team honors. But he still shot at least 51 percent from the field in each of his first seven seasons, earning six All-Star appearances and another Second Team All-NBA selection in his time with the Suns.

Known for his slender frame, “The Greyhound” is the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 15,666 points. He’s also in the top five for games, minutes, assists, steals and defensive win shares, so although a sharpshooter like Hornacek or Booker might make more sense on paper, Sweet D has to be this team’s starting 2.
