5. Alex Poythress is worthy of a two-way contract

The NBA Summer League in Las Vegas was good to former Kentucky Wildcat Alex Poythress. Poythress went undrafted in the 2016 NBA Draft and is still trying to find his role on an NBA roster.

He is a versatile wing that is still developing his skill-set. Poythress shot 52.9 percent from the floor and 33.3 percent from three while averaging 11.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.0 blocks through four games in Vegas.

Although the team’s production took a hit without Markelle Fultz, Poythress still stepped up and played some big minutes. Poythress spent most of last season in the G League with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. He averaged 18.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 blocks for the Mad Ants during the 2016-17 season.

Poythress can develop into a solid force to have on either wing with the Philadelphia 76ers. His athleticism fits with what the team looks to do on defense in speeding guys up and forcing blocks in the paint.

Poythress is currently an unrestricted free agent, although he appeared with Philadelphia’s Summer League teams in both Utah and Las Vegas. It could be worth looking into as the G League has adopted some new protocols.

The Sixers are a young and developing team with a strong core, finding players who fit their role well is key to continuing their climb towards success. They still need depth at the wing position. Poythress fills that need without question.
