Sacramento Kings should not pursue a Kyrie Irving trade
By Evan Massey
The Sacramento Kings should not pursue a trade for Cleveland Cavaliers’ superstar point guard Kyrie Irving.
Kyrie Irving is one of the hottest names in the NBA right now after informing the Cleveland Cavaliers that he would like to be traded. Reports have stated that the superstar point guard has grown unhappy with his role behind LeBron James and that he was upset with the Cavaliers’ inclusion of his name in trade talks earlier this offseason.
Needless to say, his trade request has rocked the entire NBA fan base. No one expected to see Irving ask for a trade, especially with Cleveland being the only team in the Eastern Conference that is viewed as a threat to win the NBA championship this coming season.
That being said, there are plenty of teams that will be happy to line up and put together trade packages to try and acquire a new franchise player.
One of those teams that has been rumored to have serious interest in Irving is the Sacramento Kings. According to a report from NBA analyst Sam Amico, the Kings have interest in creating an aggressive trade offer for Irving that could include No. 5 overall pick De’Aaron Fox.
Other reports have come out since Amico’s report that disagree with him. Those reports state that the Kings have no interest in trading Fox for Irving.
While the thought of Irving may sound nice, the Kings should not be involved in the Irving trade sweepstakes. Why should the Kings stay far away from making a deal for the Cavaliers’ star?
Quite simply, there are three reasons why the Kings should stay away from Irving. First and foremost, Irving will not want to stay in Sacramento long-term. His four-team wish list did not mention the Kings and he will be free to do whatever he wants in free agency following the 2018-19 season (although he does have a player option that could keep him through the 2019-20 season should he choose to use it).
Secondly, the Kings should not even consider trading their new point guard. Fox has superstar potential himself and is only 19 years old with a ton of excitement about playing for the Kings. He could end up being one of the pieces that takes Sacramento back to playoff — and possibly championship — contention at some point down the road.
Sacramento has made it clear that they are hoping to get back into playoff contention in the next two or three years. Signing players like George Hill, Zach Randolph and Vince Carter proves that. Acquiring Irving would help make them a playoff team for the next two seasons, but they would have no chance of defeating the Golden State Warriors.
Finally, the Kings are finally headed in the right direction and cannot afford to mess up their nearly perfect offseason. Not only did they snag Fox in the draft, they also got three other potential impact players in Justin Jackson, Harry Giles and Frank Mason III. All four of their rookies have the talent to help turn the Kings’ proud franchise around.
With all of that being said, the Kings cannot afford to make a move for Irving at this point in time. While it would be nice to bring in a big name, the Kings already have the pieces to get their franchise back on track. Trading for Irving would do nothing but waste the next two years until he left in free agency and broke Kings fans’ hearts yet again.
