Reason 3: They already signed a starting point guard

The Minnesota Timberwolves already signed Jeff Teague during the 2017 NBA free agency period. Teague is a great fit for the Wolves and Thibodeau’s system. He is a proficient scorer, plays good enough defense and averages more assists than Kyrie Irving.

Irving is obviously a better overall scorer than Teague, but the Wolves do not need more scoring to get better. Last season the Timberwolves were 10th in offensive efficiency, and that was without Zach LaVine for most of the season. Furthermore, that rank will presumably climb in the future with the additions of Jimmy Butler, Jeff Teague, Jamal Crawford and Taj Gibson.

If the Wolves were to acquire Irving, they would be stuck with having Teague and Irving until Dec. 15 at the earliest. That would leave the Wolves with an awkward roster with two starting-caliber point guards. It would also keep trade rumors floating over players’ heads as they are trying to compete for a playoff spot during the season.
