Los Angeles Clippers: 5 dream targets in 2017 NBA free agency
Paul Millsap, PF, Atlanta Hawks
Another dream target, and another opportunity to fill a potential void.
Paul and Redick aren’t the only ones with the potential to abandon ship this offseason. Griffin could also opt to test his luck on the open market. Chances are he’ll find a better situation elsewhere, especially with Los Angeles’ championship window nearly boarded up.
If that’s the case, a replacement will be needed. It’s not like the Clippers are going to hang their hopes on Brandon Bass getting the job done at the 4-spot. The potential departure of Marreese Speights doesn’t help either. Getting Paul Millsap to sign on the dotted line would, though.
A classic overachiever, Millsap has spent his entire NBA career being great at just about everything but elite at nothing. However, as age becomes a factor, it’s unclear if the Hawks are willing to pay top dollar to keep him around. The Clippers, however, might be tempted to, especially if some significant cap space opens up soon.
Millsap would immediately step in as a star for Los Angeles. He makes a big impact on both ends of the court, and his expanding range would help make up for the loss of Griffin. While I wouldn’t anticipate him having much interest in the Clippers if their current lineup falls apart, that’s not the point of this exercise. The fact is that they’d love to sign him if the opportunity presented itself.
