Dallas Mavericks: 25 Best Players To Play For The Mavericks
By Phil Watson
Jason Terry was a solid NBA guard when the Dallas Mavericks acquired him along with Alan Henderson and a first-round pick in 2007 from the Atlanta Hawks in August 2004 in exchange for Antoine Walker and Tony Delk.
The protected first-round pick never came to the Mavericks, but it was still a great deal.
Terry was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year in 2008-09 and was second in the league in three-pointers in 2011-12, while also serving as a key member of the Dallas teams that reached the NBA Finals in both 2006 and 2011.
Terry averaged 22 points, 3.5 assists, 2.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 40 minutes per game as a starter in the 2006 NBA Finals, shooting .478/.317/11-for-15 in a series the Mavericks lost to the Miami Heat in six games.
Five years later, as a reserve, Terry averaged 18 points, 3.2 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 32.6 minutes per game on .494/.393/.750 shooting in Dallas’ six-game victory over the Heat.
Terry left the Mavericks to sign with the Boston Celtics as a free agent in July 2012.
In eight seasons with Dallas, Terry averaged 16.1 points, 4.1 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 steals in 32.7 minutes per game, shooting .462/.388/.847.
Terry was an All-American as a senior at Arizona, averaging 21.9 points and 5.5 assists per game, and also helped the Wildcats win a national championship as a sophomore.
He was taken 10th overall by the Hawks in the 1999 NBA Draft. He earned second team All-Rookie status in 1999-2000 and was fifth in the NBA in three-pointers in 2001-02.
Terry was traded to the Brooklyn Nets in July 2013 and in February 2014 was swapped to the Sacramento Kings.
Without ever suiting up for the Kings, Terry was dealt to the Houston Rockets in September 2014 and played out his contract in 2014-15.
He re-signed with the Rockets on Aug. 24, 2015, and put up 5.9 points in 17.5 minutes per game, shooting .402/.356/.818.
Terry is 23rd in NBA history with 1,285 games, 32nd with 39,855 minutes played, third with 2,169 three-pointers and 41st with 1,515 steals.
He remains unsigned for the 2016-17 season.
