15. player. 211. How acquired: Expansion draft, New York Knicks, June 24, 1995.. PG. 1995-97. Greg Anthony
The expansion Vancouver Grizzlies made sure they had some veteran leadership at the point guard spot for their inaugural campaign when they used their first pick in the expansion draft to take Greg Anthony from the New York Knicks.
Anthony ran the point, starting 68 games while working through Achilles and thumb injuries. He was a part-time starter in 1996-97, but was limited to 65 games due to more Achilles problems.
The Grizzlies renounced Anthony’s rights in August 1997.
In two seasons in Vancouver, Anthony averaged 11.8 points, 6.6 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 29.5 minutes per game, shooting .406/.350/.756.
A three-year starter at UNLV after transferring from the University of Portland, Anthony quarterbacked the Runnin’ Rebels to their lone national championship as a junior in 1990 and averaged 11.6 points and 8.9 assists per game as a senior for a team that was undefeated until the Final Four.
The Knicks took Anthony with the 12th overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft and he was a part-time starter for their 1993-94 squad that reached the NBA Finals.
Anthony signed a free-agent deal with the Seattle SuperSonics in October 1997, but was released when the NBA lockout ended in January 1999, signing with the Portland Trail Blazers later the same day.
In July 2001, Anthony was traded to the Chicago Bulls. Waived in March 2002, Anthony signed four days later with the Milwaukee Bucks, retiring after the 2001-02 season.
He is currently a college basketball analyst for CBS Sports and Turner Sports.
