The Philadelphia 76ers made a big trade on draft night in 1988, acquiring the rights to sixth overall pick Hersey Hawkins and a first-round pick in 1989 from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for the rights to No. 3 overall selection Charles Smith.

Hawkins had come off a massive senior season at Bradley in which he was named AP Player of the Year, averaging more than 36 points and almost eight rebounds a game.

He didn’t quite put up those numbers in Philly, but he was an All-Rookie selection in 1988-89, when he finished fourth in the NBA in 3-point shooting, and was an All-Star in 1991.

Hawkins was traded in September 1993 to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for Dana Barros, Sidney Green, Greg Graham and a first-round pick in 1994.

In five seasons in Philadelphia, Hawkins averaged 19 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.8 steals in 36.1 minutes per game, shooting .464/.406/.867.

Hawkins was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics in June 1995 and later dealt to the Chicago Bulls in August 1999.

After being waived by the Bulls in September 2000, he returned to Charlotte as a free agent two days later, playing one more season before retiring after the 2000-01 campaign.

Hawkins is 47th in NBA history with 1,226 3-pointers, 27th with 1,622 steals, 50th with a 3-point percentage of .395 and 26th with a free-throw percentage of .870.
