NBA Free Agency 2016: Top 5 Most Overpaid Players
No. 5: Harrison Barnes — 4 Years, $94 Million
By far the biggest name on this list, everyone knew Harrison Barnes was going to get a max deal once the offseason began.
He’s exactly the kind of player who wouldn’t have gotten one last offseason, but thanks to the cap being raised he’s going to be paid like a top player in the league as ESPN’s Marc Stein confirms the max contract.
The only thing saving Barnes from being higher up on this list is his potential. He’s a young player who has been solid as the starting small forward for the Golden State Warriors, but no one knows how he’ll fare with the ball in his hands more often.
He’s used to playing alongside the backcourt of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, so how will he handle playing with Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews instead?
Barnes is expected to be one of the primary scoring options on the Dallas Mavericks and is easily their highest-paid player, so how will he handle that pressure?
What this comes down to is there’s a chance Barnes could be worth this money, but to prove he is, he will have to live up to every bit of the potential he supposedly has. His career averages of 10 points, 1.5 assists, and 4.6 rebounds isn’t going to cut it.
To make a long story short, giving a max deal to a mostly unproven player is a questionable move to say the least.
