Truth be told, the Kings would probably be just fine avoiding paying Lin’s salary and re-promoting Darren Collison to the starting job with Seth Curry as his backup. But if Rondo leaves, this playoff-hungry franchise will look to make a splash to replace him.
No offense to long-suffering Kings fans out there, but Mike Conley isn’t leaving Memphis to join the kind of perpetual dysfunction Sacramento is known for. If Rondo leaves, Lin automatically becomes one of the best free agent point guards on the market.
Would a smart guy like Lin be willing to join a franchise with such a bad reputation? Probably not.
But if Rondo leaves and the Kings throw enough money at him while promising him the opportunity to start for an NBA team again, perhaps that would be enough to sway him to try and create something special with DeMarcus Cousins, Willie Cauley-Stein, and the team’s seven other centers.
