2. Re-Sign D.J. Augustin

D.J. Augustin was a revelation when he came to Denver. He had been played out of the rotation at the Oklahoma City Thunder by rookie Cameron Payne so Sam Presti decided to try and get someone for his deep bench point guard.

Oklahoma City got Randy Foye and Denver got Augustin and Steve Novak, who they then traded away. This trade was an undisputed win for the Nuggets (I don’t often get to say that).

Foye was a 6.0 points per game player while at Denver and slipped further with Oklahoma City. Augustin went from not seeing any minutes at Oklahoma City to getting 23.5 per game at Denver and averaging 11.6 points as well as 4.7 assists per game.

Denver finally had a backup point guard who could run the team and keep up Emmanuel Mudiay’s production.

My guess is that Augustin would sign for a similar amount to last year, maybe a little more but he is a low-cost backup for Mudiay, allowing Denver the luxury of more cap space to go after some of the bigger name free agents.

Augustin also has the benefit of being six years younger than his main rival for minutes, Jameer Nelson, possibly giving Denver a long-term, settled point guard rotation.
