Advertisements on jerseys is becoming a reality in the NBA. The Philadelphia 76ers took the intiative to be the first major professional sports team in the U.S. to display an advertisement on their jersey. StubHub became the top suitor for the Sixers, according to ESPN.com’s Darren Rovell.

The NBA’s three-year pilot program beginning with the 2017-18 season allows teams to sell a 2.5-inches-by-2.5-inches logo patch on their jersey has some barriers. No teams are allowed to sell advertisements to companies that involve alcohol (such as Budweiser), gambling (casinos) or politics. Any other company is fair game, as long as it isn’t one of the NBA’s competitors.

Media partners ABC, ESPN and Turner are protected. Nike, who is taking over as the league’s apparel partner in 2017-18 will also be protected. Two on-court partners, Tissot (the official timekeeper) and Spalding, will be protected. Every other company is fair game.

More from Detroit Pistons

The Detroit Pistons should have many companies interested in buying their advertisements, which will not be on the jerseys that fans buy. A lot of national brands should be interested in the Pistons. They reached the playoffs as the Eastern Conference’s eighth seed, have a young core that will be grouped together for years to come and could be good for a long time coming.

All of those factors should be key for the Pistons to land a nice advertising deal. Owner Tom Gores has brought it upon himself to drive a service-oriented organization. The Pistons have been very active in the community, whether it’s donating money to programs, serving the residents of Flint during the water crisis or spending time with kids in the community.

Looking at local advertisers is a must. There are plenty to choose from, but there are also some that make more sense than others.
