The Charlotte Hornets have now won seven games in a row. How long can this winning streak last?

The Charlotte Hornets are still doing that thing where they win basketball games. Saturday night against the Houston Rockets, their winning streak grew to seven games. Charlotte welcomed James Harden and company to Time Warner Cable Arena quite rudely.

Marvin Williams again lit the world on fire with a 25-point performance, going 3-for-5 from three-point range. Jeremy Lin’s big first half also helped the cause. He finished the game with 16 points and four assists on 4-for-9 shooting. His biggest contribution may have been on the defensive end.

Lin is one of the reasons Harden struggled to tune of 12 points on 2-for-14 shooting from the field.

After a slow start, Kemba Walker exploded in the second half. Walker scored 26 points on 11-for-16 shooting; he also added six assists and five rebounds. He’s now scored 25 points or more in six of his last seven games.

As a team the Hornets shot 54.5 percent overall and 48.4 percent from three-point range (15-for-31). There’s an old basketball expression that says you “live by the three and die by the three.” Right now the Hornets are living large.

Their current winning streak is at seven games. They’ve also won 13 of their last 16, and 18 of their 23. Their record is now 37-28, fifth in the Eastern Conference. At nine games better than .500, Charlotte has its best winning percentage in the post Bobcats era.

HoopsHabit founder Michael Dunlap tweeted an interesting statistic on Sunday morning that nearly made me spit out my coffee.

There you have it. Since Jan. 31, only the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors have been better than the Charlotte Hornets. It’s hard to blame Hornets fans if they want to freak out a little bit over this recent run. Basketball is fun again in the Queen City.

Another old cliché is that “all good things must come to an end.” This one is probably true. I’m sorry to say it, but at some point the Charlotte Hornets are going to lose another basketball game. So, the question remains; how long can they keep this up?

The schedule may have something to say about whether or not their winning ways continue. While this seven-game surge has been impressive, only three of those wins came against teams with .500 or better records. Soon the road gets harder.

Monday night the Dallas Mavericks come to Charlotte. The Mavs aren’t quite as good as they were early in the season; they’ve fallen to 33-33 and are now barely clinging to the 8th seed in the Western Conference. It’s a game that the Hornets should win, but it’s also a game they could easily lose.

Wednesday they wrap up the home stand against the Orlando Magic. The Magic have also struggled during the second half of the season. At 28-37 they are out of playoff contention, but I bet they’d love to play spoiler against a division rival. The Hornets are 1-1 against Orlando this season with the victory coming in overtime. It won’t be an easy win.

After Orlando, the road really gets tough. Thursday they’ll play the second night of a back to back by going on the road against the Miami Heat. Miami is the 4th seed in the Eastern Conference and they are 2-1 against the Hornets this season. This is the game I expect to derail Charlotte’s winning streak.

If they somehow navigate this week with a 3-0 record that will push their winning streak to 10 games with a home game Saturday night against the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets aren’t very good, but they’ve already beaten the Hornets once this season. Still, the Hornets are 25-9 at home this season so that is a game you would expect them to win.

If the winning streak grows to 11 games, I can safely say that is where it will end. On Monday March 21 they face the San Antonio Spurs. The 56-10, 2nd seed in the Western Conference San Antonio Spurs. The San Antonio Spurs with the best defense in the NBA. I would be shocked if Charlotte knocked off San Antonio, even if it is a home game.

Eleven games in a row would be an insane winning streak, so lets not get greedy.

Enjoy the streak while it lasts, Hornets fans. With some formidable opponents lurking it may not last much longer.
