Utah Jazz

The Utah Jazz are one of the hottest teams in basketball and enter the All-Star break on a seven-game winning streak. They have a solid core with Gordon Hayward, Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert. The Jazz do have room to wiggle, if they so choose.

Utah has been quiet on the trade front so far, and it may be best if it stays that way. The Jazz are quietly ascending in the Western Conference standings and could realistically end up with the fifth seed. That comes without guard Dante Exum and Alec Burks playing, who are both currently out due to injury (Exum for the season, Burks for another few weeks).

  • Because of the injuries, young guards Raul Neto and Rodney Hood have stepped up and are beginning to develop into quality starters. Hood’s emergence has made Burks expendable, if the Jazz choose to trade him. But Burks is signed through the 2018-19 season and would give the Jazz depth when he returns from his injury.

KSL.com‘s Andy Larsen breaks down the trade deadline preview in full. In his article Larsen states that point guard Trey Burke may be the most likely piece to move. With the emergence of Neto and Exum’s return next season, Burke could see himself in a different uniform this season.

The Jazz don’t need to make a move unless it’s going to reap long-term benefits. The makeup of their roster is built on youth and potential. If the Jazz are already competing with two key injuries and so many young players, why would they fix something that isn’t broken? The bottom line is the Jazz could trade Burke or Burks, but that may only happen if they can get a player who can help them win long-term.
