2. Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have done perfectly fine without a dominant interior defender. Zaza Pachulia has been a revelation, providing a vital impact for Dallas as a facilitating big man who has been dominant on the boards.

True as that may be, there’s no limit to the defensive brilliance Rick Carlisle could design and execute with Hassan Whiteside manning the paint.

Acquiring Whiteside would put the Mavericks in a significantly better position to make a run at a championship. It’s essentially what was being pursued in the failed DeAndre Jordan trade, but with a greater impact from a shot-blocking perspective.

The question is, would Dallas be willing to give up small forward Chandler Parsons in order to get the deal done?

The Mavericks’ biggest hurdle would be creating an attractive enough offer to appeal to Pat Riley and warrant Whiteside’s departure. Riley would like drive the bargaining price up, and require a third team to get involved, but Parsons is a good starting point.

If Dallas were to acquire Whiteside, and Wesley Matthews were to find stability in his erratic offensive attack, the Mavericks could make noise come the postseason.
