Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets Trade

Why does Los Angeles do this?

The Lakers found out the hard way that they don’t have the pull they once had when it comes to free agency. The Lakers can keep rolling the dice but who is to say that next offseason goes any better for them? However, aside from the obvious value Lopez brings as a top end center, he could help make Los Angeles a more desirable destination for free agents like Kevin Durant.

Lopez is on a three-year deal and is only 27. He could be the franchise big the Lakers have searched for. While Clarkson has been a surprise success and losing him would downright suck for the Lakers and their fan base, it’s the price you pay. There’s a reasonable chance D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson are better off separated anyway.

Why does Brooklyn do this?

The Nets get a promising young guard in Clarkson, shed cap for the offseason and add a couple nice potential pieces in Brown and the likely high second round selection. Brown has done little of note in Los Angeles to this point, but Byron Scott sees something in him, and the Nets can’t go wrong with young talent at this point. Clarkson gives them a legitimate young building block and while they still face some hard years, they cash in on a nice little deal.
