Boston Celtics and Brooklyn Nets Trade

Why does Boston do this?

Boston is sitting on a gold mine of picks, hoping that they’ll pay off. It’s time to cash in. This trade gets them an elite low post threat. Brook Lopez is one of the league’s premier offensive centers, he’d make them scary offensively and they’d keep the majority of their core intact.

While the 2017 and 2018 picks could be incredibly valuable, will they ever produce a player better than Lopez? If they do, will the Celtics be able to develop that talent in time to play with the core they already have locked in? The Celtics are far from a lock to be in this year’s playoffs, so the move for Lopez is bold but could bring them to the next level.

Why does Brooklyn do this?

The Nets get two of their picks back! Jared Sullinger will be a restricted free agent they could retain if they choose to go that route, but the most important aspect of this trade is the retrieval of their own picks. Having their own picks in-house alleviates a ton of stress on the franchise.

The Nets would be able to rebuild with an actual return in the offseason. While the 2016 pick remains in Boston’s possession, the Nets repair most of the damage done in their 2013 blockbuster.
