5. Consistency

Consistency is key when deciding whether or not a player is worth such a big contract. For DeRozan’s sake, consistency hasn’t been an issue. The 2015-16 season is his third consecutive averaging 20+ points per game and as stated earlier, every season he has shot over 41 percent from the field.

As his offensive game continues to grow, his percentages should only increase because of his willingness to be more of a threat from three.

Perhaps one part of DeRozan’s game that could improve more is his defense. Again, with his size at shooting guard, it would be safe to assume that DeRozan collects a number of blocks, but throughout his career he has averaged just 0.3 per game. This isn’t to say DeRozan is a lackluster defender, the Raptors are currently fourth in points allowed per game (96.7), so he is obviously a big part of that success.

It may have taken DeRozan a little longer than expected to reach this level of play, but at 26 years old, he can now plan to have a few more years in his prime and in the process be the beneficiary of a max contract.
