4. Patrick Ewing

It’s no secret that Patrick Ewing desperately wants to become an NBA head coach. Whether or not he’d do a good job is a completely different question, but Ewing is the kind of big name that you could envision Prokhorov going after, especially if the more qualified candidates realize the dumpster fire that this organization has become and head for the hills.

As an assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets, you can be guaranteed a fair offer would be able to lure Ewing away from his current job to become head coach of the Brooklyn Nets — no matter how hopeless the situation looks right now.

For one thing, such a hire would bring Ewing back to New York, with an added perk for Brooklyn of peeving Knicks fans in the process. For another, Ewing could simply be a stopgap between now and a more distant future when the Nets actually have a respectable roster again.

Setting Patrick Ewing up to be the fall guy sounds bad, but they’d be giving him a chance to prove himself as a head coach until the roster has talent again. At that point, they would hope the power of his recognizable name has transformed into a legitimate head coach, but if not, they’d be able to bring in a ringer to replace him.
