5. Detroit Pistons

Despite boasting one of the highest scoring starting lineups in the league, the Detroit Pistons need serious bench help. They have the lowest scoring second unit in the NBA and those starters will be run ragged by April if this current pace continues.

The return of Brandon Jennings figures to aid Detroit’s miserable group of reserves, with the high volume shooter already enjoying a 17-point outing in just his fourth game back. The fact that it came in only 18 minutes is encouraging, even if he followed it up with a six-point, 1-for-4 performance the following game.

However, even if Jennings manages to stay healthy coming off an Achilles injury, and even if he managed to provide relatively efficient scoring off the bench, he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer. If Jennings plays well, he plays himself into a more lucrative contract offer, most likely from another team that might provide him the opportunity to start. In Detroit, he’d still be stuck behind Reggie Jackson.

That could lead the Pistons to move him before the deadline. If that winds up being the case, adding a perimeter shooter like Martin would give the bench some much-needed aid and a suitable substitute for Jennings.

The deal would also make sense for the Wolves, since they could just let Jennings go this summer — though they might want to try and secure draft compensation of some sort so they’re not dealing away an asset like Martin for essentially nothing. Even if they couldn’t get that extra sweetener involved, they might just be happy getting Martin’s deal off the books.
