9. Spurs’ Smothering Defense

Kawhi Leonard etched his name into the record books by winning Defensive Player of the Year in 2014-15. Leonard became the first perimeter player to achieve the feat since Ron Artest in 2003-04.

One season later, the San Antonio Spurs are doing their best to get Leonard a second consecutive award.

San Antonio is currently limiting opponents to just 89.8 points per game—the No. 1 mark in the NBA. The Spurs are also No. 1 in defensive efficiency at 93.4 points allowed per 100 possessions.

Statistically speaking, the Spurs have been the best defensive team in the NBA.

It’s worth noting that no team has allowed an average of less than 90 points per game since 2012-13. San Antonio has a long season ahead of it, but Gregg Popovich’s crew could conceivably buck the trend.

If your team is scheduled to face Tim Duncan, Leonard and the Spurs, you better hope they capitalize on the few open looks they’ll receive.
