On Wednesday night, Jason Richardson took to Instagram to make the sad announcement that he’d be walking away from professional basketball at the age of 34. Over his 14-year career, J-Rich averaged 17.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game.

Over his 857 regular season games, Richardson suited up for the Charlotte Bobcats, Phoenix Suns, Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers, but he’s most known for his six seasons with the Golden State Warriors, the team that drafted him fifth overall in the 2001 NBA Draft.

According to the Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports, J-Rich will be walking away from the game of basketball — after just having signed with the Atlanta Hawks — following an MRI that revealed bone spurs in his right knee.

He spent six hours thinking the decision over Wednesday before informing Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer of his decision. For a player who’s missed the majority of the last three seasons due to left knee injuries, the decision to call it quits at age 34 is a sad but sensible one.

Still, for one of the great high-volume scorers with bounce from his era, Jason Richardson never stood out quite like some of his peers. He was never quite the same caliber of scorer that Allen Iverson or Tracy McGrady were, nor did he earn as much recognition for his gravity-defying dunks as someone like Vince Carter did.

For a player who spent most of the first part of his career on bad teams, perhaps that’s why J-Rich was never acknowledged in that same class of star entertainer.

But in honor of Jason Richardson’s retirement, it’s time to take a look back on his underrated career and comb through his top 10 moments as an NBA player.
