Months before his senior season is set to get underway, five-star 2016 shooting guard Terrance Ferguson announce his college commitment via Twitter, and the Dallas (TX) native is headed out of state to Alabama.
"I am proud to announce that I will be furthering my education and basketball career at The University of Alabama"
It could go without saying that Ferguson’s commitment is tremendously encouraging news for the future of basketball under new head coach and former ESPN analyst Avery Johnson. Ferguson, the nation’s No. 11 overall prospect and No. 2 SG, is now the highest ranked recruit to commit to Alabama since Richard Hendrix – No. 9 overall – in 2005.
The hyper-athletic Prime Prep Academy product is a 6-7 wing with a smooth stroke from basically everywhere. With potential to become the high-caliber scoring threat the Crimson Tide will desperately need after losing their top three scorers from 2014-15 – Levi Randolph (15.4), Ricky Tarrant (13.1), and Rodney Cooper (11.1). Johnson’s first year as Alabama’s brain trust will be a bit of new beginning for a program that’s been entrenched in mediocrity in the football-crazed SEC. The 2015 class provided it’s fair share of talent, headlined by four-star SF Kobie Eubanks, but Ferguson’s 2016 arrival could prove to aid a significant step forward for the Tide.
Ferguson’s commitment to Alabama comes over the likes of powerhouses Kansas, Louisville and North Carolina, along with in-state options Baylor, Texas and SMU.
In today’s world of copycat recruiting with elite talents pairing as package deals, it will be interesting to see if this trend follows Ferguson to Bama. Noteworthy recruits still considering Alabama include five-star C Marques Bolden, four-star SF Mario Kegler and four-star SG Brandon Robinson.
