One of the premier prospects in this year’s class, Mudiay decided to forego his freshman year at SMU under head coach Larry Brown to earn a contract overseas. His reasoning was to assist his family as the then 18 year-old signed to play with the Guandong Southern Tigers in China.
He had limited exposure to NBA scouts and personnel, but one GM in particular made the trip. Who else but Sam Hinkie. While he didn’t give feedback on his evaluation of Mudiay’s performance, Hinkie was the only GM to see Mudiay play overseas per a report.
Mudiay did display poise and tantalizing traits in the Nike Hoop Summit for the World team, but against grown men, he starred immediately in a foreign scene.
The product of the Democratic Republic of the Congo posted considerable numbers as a first year pro averaging 18.0 ppg. and nearly six assists per game. Where he entices the Sixers is his physical tools, sky-high ceiling and playmaking tools at the point.
Getting comparisons to top-flight point guards like Russell Westbrook and John Wall validates a top pick in any draft. At No. 3 overall, the Philadelphia 76ers are getting the necessary and vital information on Mudiay to make the franchise changing decision. He is the only prospect residing in “Tier One” (Towns, Okafor, Russell, Mudiay) to schedule a workout with the team thus far.
Currently, Mudiay is a consensus top-five talent. A few years from now he could be ‘the’ top talent in this year’s draft. With a lengthy rebuilding process, the Sixers can afford to wait for that desirable ceiling Mudiay could bring to the organization.
