4. Alvin Gentry

From 2009 to 2013, Alvin Gentry led the Phoenix Suns to an under-appreciated string of success. He took the 2009-10 Suns to the Western Conference Finals and helped Phoenix float around .500 once Amar’e Stoudemire and company departed.

Currently an assistant for the 67-15 Golden State Warriors, Gentry will be a name Dell Demps inevitably considers.

The New Orleans Pelicans have an intriguing blend of offensive firepower and defensive weapons. Gentry doesn’t have a title on his resume, but he understands the game and coaches with balance.

The post-Mike D’Antoni and Lindsey Hunter Suns reflected that as Gentry led the team to a significant defensive improvement.

Gentry will install an offense that depends heavily on ball movement and trusting teammates. Defensively, he’s all about getting players to buy in and play with an unquestioned level of commitment.

After witnessing his influence on the Warriors, Gentry will be a top candidate in New Orleans.
