1. Finding The Right Head Coach

To begin the season, Jacque Vaughn was into his third season as the Magic head coach. It was clear to all that he was not the guy to bring this team forward, and he was fired midway through the year. One of his assistants, James Borrego, took over, winning his first three games. Things have gone somewhat downhill since then, although recent wins against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Minnesota Timberwolves was nice to see.

Is Borrego the next head coach of this team for the long term? There are cases for (he’s gotten this team to buy into being a defensive-first unit, although they’re still a terrible 26th in the league in defensive efficiency) and against (lack of head coaching experience). You can decide for yourself if he’s Orlando’s long term guy. But there’s no question the next hire is very important for this team.

An experienced coach who can bring this team back to the playoffs before handing over to another winner who can take this team to the final step of being contenders would be ideal. George Karl is off the table now, but there are plenty of other candidates out there. The Magic need to dodge another hire like Vaughn though, it could set this team back further still.
