Pro: Only Use Him If You Need Him

Then again, perhaps “out of necessity” isn’t the right phrase. If Kerr has a healthy Bogut, Speights and Ezeli, he doesn’t have to overplay — or even play — JaVale McGee. Plus, if something does happen to Bogut, Speights or Ezeli, wouldn’t it be good to have another center waiting in the wings?

If Kerr only uses McGee sparingly, he won’t have much of an impact on the Dubs’ chemistry. He’d only have to play McGee in that worst-case scenario where Bogut goes down, and at that point nobody would be complaining about having him on the roster.

McGee is already going to get his money either way, so his priority will be signing with a playoff contender. The Dubs should be at the forefront of that list, though the argument can be made that McGee might prefer to play a more significant role on a good team than a minimal role on a great one.

Teams like the Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets could all come calling. The Warriors would be wise to avoid allowing any of their biggest competitors to bolster their frontcourts and have McGee come back to haunt them come playoff time.
