Things get interesting when social media and changes in their careers collide, mainly with players migrating from city to city via trades or being cut from teams. The news spreads faster than any sports syndication can move it, and even the players are first to know the news as they use their Instagram, Facebook, or the famed Twitter.
Wednesday provided a glimpse into an interesting scenario involving one of the most popular teams in the NBA and what looks like a potential acquisition.
It’s time to go shopping in roughly two weeks for the Los Angeles Lakers. Feb. 19 marks the NBA trade deadline and the team is looking to acquire some talent with their expiring deals of Jeremy Lin and Jordan Hill (team option in second year).
Perhaps the team has already worked up a deal, as Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Ish Smith “accidentally” tweeted his departure from Oklahoma City to Los Angeles.
Smith did delete the tweet since it reached his account, and likely it is because he cannot be dealt until the Feb. 6 date passes.
What makes the Smith acquisition is the Lakers roster being filled for now, so it could mean more than just what’s on the surface. In order to bring Smith to Los Angeles, a player must be outgoing for the Lakers.
Could the Thunder be taking back a piece from the Lakers or another team? It is a definite possibility. The Thunder could use an active big like Jordan Hill or even Ed Davis. Both players are in the top-20 in total offensive rebounds in the league (Hill with 129, Davis with 147).
Even more interesting, the Lakers could be in play with bringing the scorned Reggie Jackson to Staples Center. Jared Zwerling of Bleacher Report has news surfacing that the Thunder plan to listen to offers for Jackson:
"“Person familiar w/ OKC’s coaching situation says front office/players behind Scott Brooks. Focus on potential trades, maybe Reggie Jackson.”"
Despite the Lakers starting Jordan Clarkson right now, the team would still be inclined to give Jackson a spot in the first five. Both players could play comfortably in their backcourt, developing for the future. On top of bringing in Jackson, the team fills one of its biggest holes on the roster.
Everything is still surrounding by many questions and much intrigue, regarding Smith’s tweet. As February rolls on, things will start to unfold and it’s likely to involve players moving from coast to coast. The power of social media is on full display and it could change the fortune of any teams involved. What’s best about the potential moves are how much they could help all teams.
Lakers fans can only hope that the Reggie Jackson scenario is truly in play. If so, it could ease the move towards their rebuild, supplanting a nice piece to a puzzle that’s completely dismantled.
