Piggybacking on the previous slide, the reason why teams like the Spurs succeed and the Timberwolves fail isn’t as much talent level as it is getting those players in the best position to succeed on both ends of the court. The Spurs are one of the best coached teams in the league and seem able to fill holes with ease. Why? They understand the need to have a complete team. They’re not focused on having stars shine brightly each night — they’re focused on what’s best for the team on every possession, on both ends of the court.
The Wolves can’t be afraid to plug specific holes and understand that the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Trading Love away will hurt their starpower, but the domino effect is that the Wolves will become a stronger team because they can fill some very specific holes. They’ll protect their future with a potential mega-star in Wiggins. They’ll enhance the present by bringing in a high-character, high-energy guy in Thaddeus Young (for pennies on the dollar). Lastly, they’ll free up some space for others to shine.
