The return of Shelvin Mack is a great positive for the Hawks heading into the new season. It means that once again, they will have a genuine point guard rotation, which was something the team lacked for a number of years. Casual observers of the Hawks have jumped to unfounded conclusions of how Mack’s signing signals that a point guard trade must be imminent, but this simply doesn’t make sense right now.

Schröder is incredibly talented but still too raw to rely on as an NBA option, so although his role will increase this year, expect him and Mack to split backup duties between them. For Mack, the departure of Louis Williams could even see him spend a little bit more time at 2 guard this year, particularly if coach Mike Budenholzer wants to partner Schröder with a steady ball-handler when the bench comes in.

Overall, Mack gives the Hawks plenty of options. He can be relied on to do whatever is asked of him, and has no qualms in stepping up at the biggest moments. Don’t be surprised if this time next year, Mack’s signing is considered one of the steals of this Summer’s free agency.
