Detroit Pistons: A Busy Start To Free Agency
By Adam McGee
Greg Monroe (Restricted Free Agent)
Finally, we move on to matters closer to home, and the Pistons restricted free agent big man, Greg Monroe. Stan Van Gundy has spoken publicly of the team’s desire to try and keep Monroe, but that may prove to be more difficult than first anticipated.
As one of the more talented big men on the market, Monroe has reportedly attracted interest from the likes of the Atlanta Hawks, Portland Trail Blazers and Cleveland Cavaliers. It’s the Orlando Magic who seem to be making the most noise though, and reports suggest that Monroe is prepared to force the Pistons hand in making decisions.
The Pistons front three of Monroe, Josh Smith and Andre Drummond were a spacing nightmare last season, and Zach Lowe of Grantland suggests that Monroe has come up with a solution. Put simply, Monroe wants Josh Smith traded, or he’ll sign the Pistons qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
A series of interesting decisions lie in wait for the Pistons. Detroit fans should feel safe in the knowledge that SVG is on the record as saying he has prepared for all potential eventualities though.
