To be perfectly honest, I don’t understand how Carmelo Anthony would fit in with the Mavs and I’m not entirely sure why he’d want to play in Dallas. But since ESPN’s Marc Stein is reporting that his sources say the Mavericks are one of three teams Melo’s interested in leaving the Knicks for, we need to take a closer look.

Not too long ago, Dirk Nowitzki said he’d love to have Melo in Dallas. The Mavs have one of the league’s best coaches in Rick Carlisle, they got a career year out of Monta Ellis and they took the eventual champions to seven games in the first round of the playoffs. There’s no denying a supporting cast of Jose Calderon, Ellis, Vince Carter, Shawn Marion and Dirk is infinitely superior to what Melo had to work with in New York this season. Playing with Dirk would also take some pressure off Melo, since it would still be the big German’s team.

But as much as Melo wants to win a championship, I’m not convinced he’s at the stage of his career where he’s willing to be a team’s second most important player. I’m still a member of the I Believe You Can Win A Championship With Carmelo Anthony As Your Best Player Club, so Dallas really doesn’t make much sense here, and even Dirk agrees it’s not realistic. Most importantly, the Mavs wouldn’t become favorites in the West by adding another power forward who needs a lot of shots to their roster.
