Consider the Suns the biggest dark horse in the herd of suitors lining up for Carmelo Anthony. Though they don’t have the star appeal of some of their competitors, Phoenix was the pleasant surprise of the 2013-14 season, winning 48 games under rookie head coach Jeff Hornacek as the dynamic backcourt tandem of Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe tore apart opposing defenses in a fun, up-tempo offense.

The Suns are one of many teams pursuing Kevin Love and should LeBron James opt out of his contract with the Miami Heat, they’ll be in the mix there as well. But after watching the success Channing Frye, Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris had as stretch-4s in a slash-and-kick, pick-and-pop offense this year, it’s hard to deny Melo would be a fantastic addition to the power forward spot for this Suns team.

Right now, the Suns are still a group of overachieving role players led by Dragic and Bledsoe, but adding a legitimate superstar in Carmelo Anthony would be the move that could push them into the contender category. Phoenix is a major market that would be sure to keep even LaLa happy, and Melo would have a young, talented core to work with moving forward. Plus, the Suns have tons of something the Knicks don’t: future draft picks. Phoenix hasn’t been mentioned much in the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes, but the Suns would be a great fit.
