Doug McDermott (SF/PF) – Creighton

We’ve all heard the Kyle Korver comparison to death by now, but it doesn’t really say a lot about who Doug McDermott really is. Aside from both players coming from basketball crazy families, and playing their college ball at Creighton, there are very few similarities between McDermott and Korver.

Where Korver is probably a sharper, more precise shooter, McDermott has the potential to excel as a pro because of his versatile offensive game. The 22-year-old is widely regarded as one of the smartest guys in college basketball, and is an example of the good that can come from staying away from the pro’s for the full four-year term. McDermott has improved year on year, culminating in him being awarded the Big East Player of the Year for 2014.

At 6’7″, the North Dakota native is often on the wrong end of the mismatch up front, but he has unerring ability to use his will and his smarts to get the ball in the basket. McDermott can spot up, finish around the rim, or from the post. He struggles a little with his handle, but when allowed to get set he’s a remarkably prolific and efficient scorer. Efficiency is not something Detroit’s shooters are currently renowned for, so drafting McDermott would definitely bolster the Pistons roster.
