Following a rough freshman year at Duke, Harry Giles will have a fresh start with the Sacramento Kings as he gets ready to embark on his NBA journey.

When the Sacramento Kings traded down in the 2017 NBA Draft, they snatched up an additional pick. Selecting Malik Monk or Donovan Mitchell was probably the better move, but hindsight is 20/20. With a roster full of recent first round draft picks, especially after trading away DeMarcus Cousins, their roster is a bit too full of young talent.

Against the line of logic, the Kings passed on the chance to take another exciting talent in a deep lottery. Still, flipping No. 10 for No. 15 and 20 wasn’t bad value. The most practical way to approach these two selections would be to find balance — look for the best player available, a safer pick, with one, and with the other selection, swing for the fences.

The Kings did just that. With the 15th pick they took Justin Jackson out of North Carolina, a moderately safe selection. Then they scooped up Harry Giles with their third first-rounder of the night.

Jackson has a chance to plug right into the Kings this year thanks to their youth and his ability to hit threes. Giles was always going to be a fascinating player to follow. Now, in Sacramento he finds himself on a roster full of big men. Breaking into that rotation might be one step too far ahead right now. Given his injury history, Giles’ goals for the year should be much more modified than his peers.
