Michael Olowokandi

Yes the Clippers made the mistake of drafting a 7-footer who only started playing organized basketball at the age of 18. Better yet … they made the mistake of drafting him first overall.

Almost thirteen years ago the Clippers hired Kareem Abdul Jabbar to coach Michael “Kandi Man” Olowokandi. When asked about that experience, Kareem commented “When I coached for the Clippers, I had to deal with Michael Olowokandi, a player who perfectly fit the description talented but uncoachable.”

Kareem must have been feeling generous for using the word “talented” or maybe his mind was stuck in limbo. Perhaps he couldn’t think of an accurate description to describe his experience with Olowokandi – you know for example when you say “what’s the word I’m looking for?”

Olowokandi’s best season was in the last year of his five with Clippers. He averaged 12.3 points and 9.1 rebounds as a starting center. Eventually his knees would catch up with his game, and burn out quickly – ending Kandi Man’s career after nine seasons.
